In partnership with Green Roof info Think Tank, this day-long virtual event will dive into best practices for long-term, thriving green roofs. Expert presenters will be focusing on designing the roof for maintenance, and discussing what is typically seen during maintenance on existing Portland green roofs of all ages and types. We will also address inequity in green infrastructure, how to survive the value engineering process, and we will have multiple short-videos on a variety of unique approaches to green roof design from local practitioners.
April 29th - The ticketed portion of the Virtual Symposium. All programming will take place virtually through Zoom from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM PT.
April 30th - The un-ticketed portion of the symposium. Self Guided Tours will be hosted from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM PT. For those that attend the Virtual Symposium and the Self Guided Tours, there will be an In-Person Happy Hour at Shine Distillery from 3:30 PM - 5:50 PM PT.

10:15am | Vivek Shandas, Professor of Climate Transformation and Director of the Sustaining Urban Places Research Lab (SUPR Lab) at Portland State University | Developing designs that integrate social justice with ecological design
The past decade has seen a window of opportunity for integrating social equity into ecological design, environmental conservation, and urban green efforts. Yet despite the long standing calls, few institutions are meaningfully developing strategies for establishing enduring systems that challenge historic norms, arguably, because conservation efforts have run parallel to social justice agendas. This presentation will provide evidence about the implications of past urban planning policies on current day exposure to acute environmental impacts, such as air quality and urban heat, and offer examples for developing designs that integrate social justice within ecological design. |
11:00am | Jean Von Bargen Root, Principal and Director of Sustainability, MWA Architects, Inc. & Kevin Bower, Columbia Green Technologies - Director of Sales West Coast | Communicating with Clients About Green Roof Projects
How to assess when a green roof is beneficial to a project, communicate the benefits and drawbacks to the building owner, and help the green roof survive value engineering. |
