Vancouver Green Roof Symposium

  • Creekside Community Recreation Centre 1 Athletes Way Vancouver, BC, V5Y 0C2 Canada (map)

The City of Vancouver has set ambitious targets of making all new buildings "carbon neutral" by 2030 and for managing rainwater on site through its RainCity Strategy. To meet these targets the city has implemented green building programs that include the promotion of Green Roofs in Vancouver. Join us for this in person symposium as we showcase best practices in green roof design, maintenance and policy making on the West Coast.

Lunch will be available for attendees. Masks are recommended, but not required.

Walk in registration are welcomed day of the event!

This presentation provides a concise update about recent LID research by greenskins lab SALA UBC involving extensive green roof stormwater mitigation as part of the LID treatment train. 1. What is Low Impact Design (LID) and how are extensive roofs part of it 2. Introduction to LID tool created by the greenskins lab team 3. Future importance of LID in the environment (urban and rural) and infrastructure design.
10:00am Elizabeth Hart Morris, President of Green Up Roofing Portland Green Roof Policy Implementation and Future

How Portland created a green roof mandate through grassroots efforts, and ways that incentives may be extended outside of Center City. Learn how Portland found success in green roof policy development.
10:30pm Karen Liu, Green Roof Specialist, Next Level Stormwater Management West Coast Roof Greening: Less is More

Thanks to the unique rainforest climate of Vancouver, less is more when it comes to roof greening. Regional research has shown that lightweight extensive systems can perform as well as heavier counterparts in terms of benefits such as stormwater management and energy saving. We will examine a minimalist lightweight soilless green roof system installed on 3 public sector buildings in BC – why they were specified and how they perform – and demonstrate that lightweight systems can increase ROI and retrofit potential for the existing building stock, and therefore can contribute significantly to any green roof strategies for the west coast.
11:00am Break
11:15am Penh Tov, P.Eng. Managing Director, Net Zero Water Rainwater Harvesting Systems for Green Roofs Runoff Runoff

Rainwater harvesting systems are designed based on anticipated source water quality and end use. With the installation of green roofs, the characteristics of rainwater runoff from these surfaces are materially different from traditional hard surface impervious roofs. As a result, rainwater harvesting systems need to be designed to address dissolved solids and nutrients washed from green roofs relative to the end use. This presentation goes over the different types of rainwater harvesting solutions for each type of application, key design considerations when treating green roof runoff and O&M considerations.
11:45am Jason Teetaert, P.Eng, Co-Founder & VP of Business Development at Structuring Monitoring Technologies

Structure Monitoring Technologies and Tools For Quality Assurance, Risk Mitigation & Innovation

Construction waterproofing deficiencies and the structural health of buildings are barely visible until the building failure becomes so detrimental that causes loss in a vicious cycle. Innovative monitoring technologies enable building owners, operators, and scientists to predict future damages and/or limit liability through knowledge of what was once invisible - hidden in the walls, roof and foundation of a building - empowering the industry to develop safer, healthier and more sustainable buildings.
12:15pm Holly Horne, OALA, GRP General Manager Ginkgo Sustainability B.C.

Opportunities, Challenges and Considerations in Green Roof Design, Installation and Maintenance Across Canada.

Climatic conditions in Canada vary greatly from East to West. This provides a number of opportunities and challenges in green roof design, installation and maintenance. In this session we will compare local climates in Vancouver and Toronto and how these conditions affect the planning of green roofs. Attendees will gain an understanding of the various climatic conditions that must be considered when designing, installing or maintaining green roofs.

1:45pm Dr. Maureen Connelly, Director / Faculty, Centre of Architectural Ecology, British Columbia Institute of Technology

Empirical Findings on Green roof Performance in Metro Vancouver

This presentation will review existing inventory of empirical findings on the stormwater, energy and acoustic performance of green roofs in the Metro Vancouver region. The stormwater performance data discussed was collected from the Green Roof Research Facility (GRRF), a Vancouver based dedicated research centre instrumented with over 100 sensors for data collection, and from the green roofs of the Burnaby Electronic Art Campus, White Rock Operations Building, Victoria Capital Regional District. The range of performance from 8 climate-controlled evaluation modules of varied green roof systems will be reviewed. Energy performance and acoustical performance data from the GRRF and field-test site will be similarly presented.
2:15pm Roxanne Miller, Directrice & Landscape Architect AAPQ CSLA SOPRANATURE® Canada

Award Winning IGA Duchemin's Rooftop Farm: A Case Study

This presentation will provide an overview of different economic and operational models of open rooftop farming. It will include a review for opportunities for revenue generation and important design principles. The Award Winning IGA's rooftop farm is one of the first supermarkets in Canada to sell produce grown on its own roofs. The first store to use an irrigation system with water recovered from its dehumidification system and measure 25,000 square feet, it’s the largest organic garden on a supermarket rooftop. She will discuss how it came to be and what is needed to produce, harvest and sell all the great products grown on this urban agriculture green roof. Learn how this great project came to be and what it implies to produce fresh local food on a roof.
2:45pm Ryan Vasseur, Manager of Living Building Maintenance at Architek

Thriving Green Roofs: How Advanced Maintenance Can Take Green Roofs to New Heights

We face an important task to improve biodiversity in both soil and plants on green roofs and attract as much wildlife as possible. Through collaboration with designers, soil science and other experts, and with a keen sense of observation during maintenance visits we can take a team oriented approach to helping green roofs take an evolutionary step. The future for green roofs is unlimited. Around the world green roofs are producing thousands of pounds of food per year as farms in the middle of cities. In other places they are mimicking biologically diverse meadows that after decades of development can be brought back into the centre of urban areas benefiting both wildlife and people. When we take an active approach green roof maintenance becomes a regenerative practice that produces innumerable benefits. Learn how cutting edge green roof maintenance practices are helping green roofs thrive.
3:15pm Break
