New York Virtual Symposium

New NYC Local Laws 92 and 94 require green roofs, solar panels or a combination of both on all new roofs and roof replacements. Strong policy has been a key driver in New York becoming a green infrastructure leader. Learn from the pros at GRHC’s NYC Virtual Symposium about excellent design projects, new regulations, the Climate Mobilization Act, and sources of project funding.

Alan will discuss the development of the project from inception in 2017 to installation in 2018 and present day update. He will cover the collaborative process working with project partners Ecowalls and Parker Plants, the client's goals, the project context, technology options explored and selected, and development goals, choices and obstacles along the way. Also covered will be how the living wall was developed to tell a story of the client company's brand, how the building's occupants benefit from this living wall on a daily basis, and how everyone involved was pleasantly surprised to see how the wall is now used

Installed in 2012, this Cities Alive Award winner (2016) showcases how existing traditional rooftops can be transformed into places of natural calm and inspiration. Situated in the ever evolving neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn - where very few trees grow - the owners of this condominium took the initiative to embrace green roof technology and create an amenity space that would enhance their overall quality of life at home. New York Green Roofs worked with the client to design the green roofs, we installed them and we have maintained them from the beginning. This presentation will highlight some of the challenges and triumphs that have arisen as this project has established over time.

Green roofs have many documented benefits for cities, including energy savings, storm water retention, wildlife habitat and biodiversity, and the reduction of ambient temperatures, thus reducing the urban heat island effect. In this presentation, Mark Morrison will go over challenges that his firm MKM has encountered and solved, on a project by project basis. Morrison will highlight major structural and material topics that landscape architects must understand and employ for creating successful projects.
