Agenda

Time Speaker Topic
1:00 Elizabeth Freeman Calabrese, AIA, WELL Faculty, NCARB, LEED-AP, Calabrese Architects, Inc. Principles of Biophilic Design

Elizabeth will review the principles of biophilic design that were intended by Dr. Stephen Kellert to be a guiding compass of the biophilic design framework and she will show case studies that embrace these principles.
1:30 William Browning, Managing Partner, Terrapin Bright Green Biophilia and Biomimicry for the Interface Basecamp

Interface is a leading manufacturer of commercial floor coverings, and has a deep commitment to sustainability. Their new headquarters was intended to be a visible demonstration of their commitments. The Interface Basecamp is the redesign of a 1970s office building in midtown Atlanta. Two concepts were crucial to the project. Biophilic design concepts to connect the Interface associates and visitors to experiences of nature were intended to support their health and well-being. Factory as a Forest, is an initiative in biomimicry to develop environmental performance standards based on the ecosystem services of the indigenous ecology.
2:00 Jana Soderlund, DR, Biophilic Solutions Integrating biophilic design for improved health outcomes.

Research has well established the multiple health benefits of nature to humans, both physiologically and psychologically. This presentation will showcase examples of successful integration of biophilic design elements in two Singaporean hospitals and one aged care facility. Although constructed in a tropical climate the principles and approach employed are translatable to any city. A brief story from Vancouver demonstrates this.
2:20 Q&A
2:30 Break
2:50 Rohan Lilauwala, GRP, Program Manager, Green Infrastructure Foundation Biophilic Design and Living Architecture in Green Building Rating Systems

Incorporating living architecture elements can help projects achieve credits for biophilic design in green building and site rating systems like LEED, SITES, WELL, and the Living Architecture Performance Tool. Learn what credits are available, how designers can take advantage of credits while achieving benefits for building owners and the public, and about the new Living Architecture Performance Tool, designed to holistically capture the range of green roof and wall benefits.
3:10 Mary Golden, Advocacy Incubator, Green Plants for Green Buildings Biophilic Design – Interior Design Strategies for Beauty, Wellness and Productivity

These days a growing number of people are engaging in conversations about their physical spaces. "How can we maintain our health and equanimity in the work-from-home culture?" "How will our workplace protect our health once it opens back up?" Biophilic design principles provide a brilliant solution to many of the outcomes desired by individuals and organizations alike. A window of opportunity is opening - we can change our built environments for the better by adopting these design strategies.
3:30 Bethany Borel, Senior Associate, COOKFOX The Natural Habitat of People: Designing Gardens for the Mind

This presentation will explore how COOKFOX uses biophilic design strategies to create architectural landscapes that are inspired by nature and support both our physiological and mental well being. A brief overview of biophilia and biophilic design will provide the foundation for the audience to understand the concepts and strategies exemplified through built examples.
