What goes up on a roof can come down ….. but it will cost you. Understanding the long term design indent of a green roof project can thwart future expense when a change is desired. The installation costs of a green roof will vary. There are many factors to consider, especially ten floors up. It takes a high price to install material on a high-rise; however you can double that figure when it must be removed because it did not perform to specifications. If the crane is gone and the building is occupied; a wheel barrow up and down an elevator on a Sunday may be the only option. When selecting a growing media for a green roof system it must be understood that the performance of the plant material is affected by the micro-climate. Plants that are not drought tolerant cannot survive the summer heat growing in the typical extensive green roof media designed only for sedums and succulents. This program will provide case studies on development, conveyance, performance and interactions with the trades on green roof projects.
1:30 Kathryn Blatt Ancaya, PLA, Living Roofs Inc.; Joshua Robinson, PE, Robinson Design Engineers Living Roofs as Green Infrastructure

Living roofs are a dynamic and integrated approach to meeting the environmental challenges in our southeastern cities. The presentation will focus on the environmental, social, and economic benefits of living roofs and do a deep dive into stormwater analyses of living roof installations in the Carolinas.
1:50 Ed Snodgrass, Emory Knoll Farms Selecting Plants for Carolina Green Roofs

The Carolinas present unique challenges for green roofs. They are far enough north to have freezing temperatures; far enough south to have warm nights and far enough east to have high humidity and rainfall. This talk will frame how to think about plant choices in this climate and offer some plant choices to consider as well as strategies for establishment and maintenance.

2:45 Dr. Clayton Rugh Effective, Performance-Based Green Roof Incentive Policies

Municipal governments promote community awareness and development of green roof projects through financial and permitting incentive policies. Green roofs provide a wide array of economic, environmental and social benefits; though reduction and delay of stormwater runoff is one of the most valuable for urban infrastructure. However, some municipal policies achieve better outcomes for broader green roof utilization and stormwater management practice. This presentation will review the variety of incentive policy guidelines and how to optimize green roof program criteria to achieve municipal goals.
3:05 Kevin Boyer, City of Raleigh Incentizing Green Stormwater Solutions: Raleigh's Rainwater Rewards Cost-Sharing Program
3:25 Jessica Wilson, USGBC A Practitioner’s Perspective on the Benefits of Green Roofs & Green Walls

Jessica serves as Project Manager for the U.S. Green Building Council - Carolinas Community. Her presentation will highlight the myriad of positive environmental, health, and community benefits of green roofs and living walls from a green building perspective. From a practitioner’s perspective, she has installed and maintained green roofs and living walls, including the tallest indoor living wall in North Carolina at Untapped Headquarters in Wilmington, NC. She will share insights from her personal project experience, along with best design and maintenance practices.
