Constructed Vertical Flow Wetlands and Managing Stormwater with Green Walls
Brad Bass, PhD; University of Toronto
Wetlands and other natural features have been promoted as a best management practice for treating stormwater runoff, especially with regard to water quality. These constructed replicas of natural features require more space than other management options. For example, to handle the runoff from one hectare of an urban landscape requires 400 m2 (4300 ft2; the end zone of a football field measuring 5350m2) of area for the buffer. An alternative is to build these features in the vertical. Constructed Vertical Flow Wetlands have been proposed for agriculture. Innovative living wall designs, covering the last 40 years, provide templates for urban areas. This presentation will review some ongoing research and designs for constructed vertical flow wetlands, or vertical wetlands, which can be used to maintain for food production and to maintain water quality.
IAC Living Wall on Sunset Blvd
Paul Kephart; Rana Creek Design
Draping 11,000 plants over an existing six-story building, Rana Creek and Rios Clemente Hale Studios created a living wall to revitalize the IAC Headquarters in Hollywood, CA. Suspended at an angle from the building face, the living wall grows along the structure, transitioning from vertical to horizontal, forming a dramatic canopy at the building entrance. Seeking to create a new urban ecology, the living wall provides a breath of fresh air for pedestrians on the iconic Sunset Strip, and creates habitat opportunities and other resources for regional birds and pollinators.
Annuals vs. Perennials in Outdoor Cold Climate Living Walls
Lori May; LiveWall
It’s no secret that cold winter climates can be harsh on living wall plants. In this session, LiveWall sales and technical representative Lori May will review the pros and cons of using annuals versus perennials in cold winter climates. Lori will share tips for successful overwintering of perennials and a comparison of costs of maintenance and plant replacement. Lori will also present case studies of Midwestern living walls with different types of plantings.
Design, Installation and Maintenance of an Outdoor Living Wall in Toronto, ON
Sasha Liston-Milnes, M.Sc; Ginkgo Sustainability
Project Summary – Toronto, ON (Great Lakes St. Lawrence Climate Region) - 32m² outdoor Sempergreen living wall system installed by Ginkgo Sustainability in September 2019 as part of a residential backyard renovation. This project includes three living walls with East, West and North orientations; we had an opportunity to incorporate a wide variety of sun and shade tolerant species with a focus on regionally hardy evergreens, perennial herbaceous plants and grasses. The wall receives water and fertilizer from an automatic irrigation and monitoring system, which includes moisture sensors and automatic blow out and start up controlled by a temperature sensor at the wall. This session will highlight successes, challenges and lessons learned throughout the first year of establishment of an outdoor living wall in Toronto, ON.
Choosing the Right Green Facade to Maximize Return
Charlene Mortale; greenscreen
For building energy efficiency, durability, natural beauty, cost effectiveness, and adaptability, green facades offer the design community a substantial asset. This course examines the required considerations for a successful green facade installation and includes discussions on system selection, design, plant selection, maintenance, and client/owner education.
Meeting Client Needs with Interior Green Walls
Dylan Robertson; New Earth Solutions
Looking at two interior green wall installations at two different scales, meeting expectations, and measuring outcomes. One client wanted to open up a lobby as a sales centre for a nearby condo development and needed to refurbish the old space to appeal to a higher end crowd they were now trying to attract. The other was a residential client who had a large backyard fence that stood next to the patio and was looking to introduce life and beauty to their space.
