Green roofs can make cities more livable and sustainable for people, plants, and animals. Green roofs reduce urban flooding, conserve energy use in buildings, sequester carbon, protect waterproofing from hail damage and extend the life of the roof. This talk explores ways that native landscapes have become a source of inspiration for a new generation of green roofs that make habitats for pollinators, migratory birds, and more. Case studies from Ecoregional Green Roofs will be presented to shed light on how green roofs with native plants play an integral role in making buildings that meet the Living Building Challenge, LEED Certification, and other measures of sustainability. Case studies will cover sustainable living roofs along the Front Range Urban Corridor and the western US.

Supporting the Vision of Denver Residents with the Green Buildings Ordinance and Additional Regulatory Provisions

In November 2018, in collaboration with the residents of Denver, the City team introduced the Green Buildings Ordinance. After several years of use, it’s possible now to reflect on how development, site, and building project teams in Denver have integrated priorities of this ordinance with those of the market sectors they serve. The Green Buildings Ordinance serves as a beneficial bridge between public and private sector partners, empowering a stronger dialogue and collaboration as we build Denver’s neighborhoods together.

In our rapidly growing community, residents clearly expressed through the Green Buildings Ordinance that quality of urban environment for every citizen is an essential goal. Responding to a changing climate and fragile resources in the region, City teams are continuing to build out from the vision of this ordinance through related initiatives like the Denver Green Code. Denver residents’ Comprehensive Plan 2040 vision is the foundation for work being pursued at the City. We’re excited to discuss what’s been achieved to date with the Green Buildings Ordinance, and some additional complementary initiatives underway.
