Phillips Eco-Enterprise Center (PEEC) Building and Green Roof

The PEEC opened in 1999 as one of the first speculatively-built commercial facilities to employ integrative approach to sustainable design and construction. This 64,000 s.f. facility participated in the pilot phase of USGBC LEED building rating program and is home to 20 companies. Aside from a green roof, the PEEC integrates sustainable design features including a ground source heat pump, sun-tracking skylights, aggressive use of salvaged materials, low-emission finishes and adhesives, a prairie restoration and a 34-kW photovoltaic array. The 4000 s.f. green roof was partially installed during construction and completed in 2004 and was the recipient of the 2006 Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Award of Excellence in the Extensive Industrial/Commercial category. The green roof retains 85% of rainfall and is accessible to tenants and visitors via a third-story corridor. The roof integrates a walkway and observation deck constructed from recycled plastic lumber and involves contrasting sedum species with grasses and wildflowers native to Minnesota's bedrock bluff prairie ecosystem.

Tour time: 2.5 hours. Transportation: LRT. Cost: $35.

This library, completed in 1981 represents pioneer work in earth-sheltering and day lighting. The green roof covers public space underground. The final stop will be the Edgewater Condominiums. This luxury condo project includes 24 condos and features a green roof accessible to the three penthouse condo owners.
