Heat waves and flooding are increasing in frequency and intensity, while mental and physical health are in decline. Our communities need to adapt to the growing impacts of climate change fast. CitiesAlive provides you with proven green infrastructure solutions.
The theme of this year’s conference is Green Infrastructure & Water in a Changing Climate. Water is critical to the health and resiliency of our communities. Over the last several years, Philadelphia has become a green infrastructure leader through creative policy solutions that work to create vibrant community spaces while managing stormwater. In 2011 the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) launched the Green City, Clean Waters 25-year plan to reduce the volume of stormwater entering combined sewers using green infrastructure and to expand stormwater treatment capacity with traditional infrastructure improvements. Only 10 years into the plan, PWD has exceeded their 10-year pollution reduction goal, with new infrastructure investments now keeping nearly three billion gallons of stormwater runoff and sewer overflow out of local waterways.
